Tool Bits
The term tool bit generally refers to a non-rotary cutting tool used in
metal lathes, shapers, and planers. Such cutters are also often referred
to by the set-phrase name of single-point cutting tool. The cutting edge
is ground to suit a particular machining operation and may be
resharpened or reshaped as needed. The ground tool bit is held rigidly
by a tool holder while it is cutting.
End Mills
End mills are the primary cutting tools used in a vertical mill such as
the mini-mills we are concerned with. Like drills, they come in a wide
variety of styles and quality levels. The most common ones you will need
for getting started are 2-flute and 4-flute end mils. You can buy them
individually as needed, or in sets.
Reamer
A reamer or ream is a tool for enlarging holes and is used in
metalworking. It may be used as a hand tool or may have a specialized
drive end. For production machine tools the drive will usually be a
standard taper. For hand tools the drive will usually be a square drive,
intended for use with the same type of wrench used to turn a tap for the
cutting of screw threads.
Taper pins
Taper pins are tools used for enlarging holes usually for mechanical,
Machine Tapers or body modification purposes. They are typically
designed as long metal rods with one end having a slightly larger
diameter than the other. In body modification, tapers are usually used
for expanding piercing in order to accommodate larger gauge ear rings or
plugs. They are not commonly used directly as ear rings, but rather for
assisting in the placement of rings or plugs. However, variations in
taper designs can be intended for common usage as ear rings. Most tapers
are constructed from surgical steel, but can also be found in acrylic or
polished stone. Most of these items are also sold with o-rings, which
are small rubber bands to help keep piercings in place.
